RSIEC To Partner Police, Others On LG Polls

To enhance a free and fair  Local Government Election in Rivers State, the State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), has commenced an advocacy visit to major stakeholders in the electoral process.

Speaking during the  Commission’s visit to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, the State Director of National Orientation Agency NOA, Mr. Oliver Worlugbum and the State Director of State Security Service (SSS) Mr Ekpeyong  Ita, the chairman of RSIEC, Prof. Augustine Ahiazu all assured that the  Commission will live up to its expectation and mandate by ensuring a credible, transparent, free and fair election that would be accepted by all.

Speaking, Ahiazu said the mandate given to the  commission required the partnerhip and collaboration of stakeholders such as the Police, SSS, NOA and other agencies.

According to him, with the assistance of such stakeholders, the commission’s aim of achieving a credible local government council poll will be met”.

The RSIEC boss commended the various agencies  for always responding to the commission’s security challenges and other needs, and urged them to maintain the tempo, while also extending their hands  of friendship to the new board.

In their separate speeches, the commissioner of police, the State Director of  SSS and State Director, NOA, all commended the Prof. Ahiazu-led RSIEC  for their plan for credible election.

They promised to give the commission their support in ensuring a hitch-free  LG election.

At the National Orientation Agency’s Office, the State Director, Mr. Worlugbum, assured the new RSIEC board of the determination of the agency to “educate, inform, reform and mobilise the people at both the grassroot and urban areas during elections”.

The NOA boss commended members of the board for being chosen to pilot  the affairs of the electoral body and advised the commission to always provide a level  playing field for all the political parties and not to yield to pressure from politicians.

The stakeholders meeting by the commission will continue with a visit to the 82 Division Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Airforce, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Media  houses, NGOs and other relevant bodies.
