RSG To Relocate School Of Nursing
Governor Chibuike Amaechi has hinted of plans to relocate the school of Nursing to a permanent site at the old University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at a Town Hall meeting with the people of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Governor Amaechi also disclosed that the old UPTH Complex would also have a new hospital to be built by the state government in collaboration with the Niger Delta Developemnt Commission.
In another development, women in Rivers State have been charged to take the matter of their children health seriously.
President of the National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS), Rivers State Chapter, Evelyn Nweke gave this charge in a goodwill message at the flag off of the second round of this year’s Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW), at the Churchhill Model Health Care Centre, Port Harcourt.
Mrs Nweke also called on the Women to take advantage of health facilities provided by the state government and ensure that their children remain in good health.
She stated that immunisation was important in keeping children and women of child bearing age healthy, particularly in government’s policy on preventive health care delivery.
She emphasised the importance of immunisation in the prevention of childhood killer diseases and the preservation of the life of the mother during delivery.
She further said pregnant women owed it to their unborn babies to register in a government approved health facility for proper advice and prompt medical attention.
She advised against patronage of prayer houses and other unhygienic places for delivery where they do not have the expertise to handle emergencies, noting that the government recognised health facilities have doctors and other professionals to cater for their needs.
Mrs Nweke said, immunisation was the legitimate right of under five children and insisted that mothers and care givers must take their children and wards for immunisation.
She also called on women to know their HIV status by going for screening for the virus, pointing out that being positive was not a death sentence and declared that help was available for people living with the virus through the state government and added that those who are negative could get tips on how to stay negative at government health facilities.
Other donors and partners were present at the ceremony while the state governor, Rt Hon Amaechi administered the pilot dose of vaccine to flag off the week, which is expected to run from November 26, 2012 to December 1, 2012.
