RSG Spends N5.4bn On Works In PH City

Over N5.4 billion has so far been spent by the Rivers State Government in the building of new model primary schools and other projects in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

Governor Amaechi gave the figures, Monday during an accountability forum with the people of the local government area in Port Harcourt, saying, only 10 out of the 32 primary schools were yet to be completed.

He disclosed that three new additional schools had been awarded to meet the growing school enrolment in the local government, noting that the new schools had been re-designed to have 200 classrooms, “we have stopped building 14 classrooms. Now, we are building 20 classrooms to meet demand.”

On roads, Governor Amaechi said government plans to award a new contract for the road linking Aggrey Road to Hospital Road to reduce traffic problems in that axis.

He further stated that the government would ensure the rehabilitation of decaying roads in the city, especially in Diobu, and Old GRA axis, pointing out that the ones in Old Port Harcourt Township and D-Line were ongoing and would soon be completed.

Listing his achievements on health, Governor Amaechi averred that apart from the new model health centres, his administration had built new world class hospitals at Emenike in Diobu and Dental Hospital at Garrison, including the one at the State University of Science and Technology campus.

Amaechi assured of the opening of the hospitals next year despite delays to get private firms to run them, “I will open them myself because there is no reason to delay again”.

On scholarship, Amaechi enumerated 77 names that had benefitted from the scheme. He responded to call by the people that a new method would be evolved to ensure that majority of the beneficiaries were the poor, but brilliant students from the area.

Member, House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt Constituency 1, Barrister Ken Chikere thanked the governor for the visit, “they know that you are one governor who is ready to mortgage yourself for development,” he added.

Secretary to the State Government, Mr George Feyii, in his remarks observed that the forum was an opportunity for the people of the area to interact with the governor on his performance, adding that accountability remains a cornerstone in the Amaechi-led administration.

Earlier in his remarks, Chairman of the Council and Mayor of Port Harcourt City, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo noted that the town hall meeting had brought a new dimension to governance in the state.

He added, “the administration has embarked on numerous projects that have impacted on the lives of the people.”

Hon Akarolo appealed to the government to construct a new road in Borikiri area to decongest the heavy traffic witnessed in the area.
