Rotary Plans Shelter For Flood Victims

As its contribution to the resettlement of victims of the flood disaster in parts of Rivers State, the Rotary Club Zones 21 and 22 in District 9140, is to collaborate with its international partners to provide temporary shelter for victims of the flood.

The Rivers State Co-ordinator of the Flood Disaster Committee, Rotary Club District 9140, Rotarian Joe Asole who said this during the club’s donation of relief materials to camps in Ahoada East and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area said that the club is currently holding talks with Shelter Pot, an international organisation, to provide temporary shelters to displaced people.

Rotarian Asole described the disaster as at the worst in recent times in the state, saying that the provision of relief materials was the club modest contributions towards alleviating their suffering.

At the St. Paul’s Primary School Camp, in Ahoada the camp commandant, Mrs Caroline Okpokiri said the displaced persons need to be rehabilitated as most of them have lost their homes to the flood.

Mrs Okpokiri thanked Rotary Club for the support and urged other organizations emulate the clubs.

Other camps visited the club include, the St. Michael’s Primary School and St. Stephen school all in Omoku.

Meanwhile the Oba of Ogbaland, His Majesty Eze Chukwumela Nnam Obi II has charged public-spirited individuals to come to the aid of the flood victims in the area.

Speaking during a courtesy call on him by members of Rotary Club District 9140, Oba who was represented by the Eze Usomini, HRM Eze A. N. Osoh, thanked the club for its concern to the people, stressing that the gesture has distinguished Rotary as a club that has genuine interest in the affairs of the people of Ogbaland.

The traditional ruler however urged other organizations to emulate the Rotary Club by also providing for victims of flood disaster.

The delegation had earlier visited the palace of the Eze Egi, HRM Kingdom Elenwa to also commiserate with him.
