Rivers Wins Gold, Silver At Eko 2012
Rivers State contingent to the 18th National Sports Festival, Eko 2012, Team Rivers, yesterday won the first available gold and silver medals of the fiesta after Bob Osim, successfully defended the cyling 100 metres sprint gold medal that he won at the 17th edition of the Sports Festival in Port Harcourt. Osim’s victory in the men’s 100 metres sprint event is an indication and a positive sign that Team Rivers is on the right path to achieving its ambition of successfully defending the overall title of the festival won as hosts at the 17th edition, Garden City Games 2012, last year.
Moments after Osim’s victory yesterday, Team Rivers also claimed the silver medal in the same cycling event for women to establish early lead on the medals table from Day One.
Reacting to Team Rivers opening performance at Eko 2012, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, and chairman, Media and Publicity, Team Rivers Participation Committee, Mrs Ibim Semenitari said that Team Rivers would claim all gold medals available in the cycling event of the festival. According to her, Team Rivers is head and shoulder above other competitors and has no match in cycling in Nigeria.
After the formal opening ceremony of the fiesta last night, competitions in various events are expected to commence today.
