Rivers Increases Medal Haul …Wins 7 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze

With three days gone since the official opening ceremony of Eko 2012, Team Rivers has strengthened its position on top of the medals table with additional two gold and silver medals yesterday.

Winner of the first gold medal of the festival, Edward Osim yesterday chalked another gold in Cycling’s 1000 metres sprint event and led the men’s team to another gold in the 4 km Team pursuit event.

Glory Odiase and the women’s team secured two silver medals in the women’s 1000metres sprint and 4km team pursuit events, respectively.

Odiase and the women’s team were beaten to the gold by their Oyo state counterparts.

Team Rivers also won one gold, two bronze medals in Judo and One gold, one silver one bronze medals in taekwondo, yesterday.

While presenting the Cycling medals yesterday, the Eko2012 Local Organising Committee, LOC, chaiman, Princess Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire said that Lagos was not competing to win the Games at all cost. According to her, the state would be glad to win but the major focus was to inspire friendship and encourage the development of sports as much as possible

In some of the other games played yesterday, Rivers female hockey team defeated their Adamawa opponents 1-0 to progress to the second round.
