A member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Chinedu Nwamba, has constituted a 50-member committee to look into the plight of the poverty-stricken members of his constituency.

Speaking in an interview with our correspondent in Enugu on Thursday, Nwamba (PDP- Nsukka East), said the committee was code-named Ocho Udo Solidarity Movement.

He said the essence of the movement was to help the needy.

According to him, the members of the committee are drawn from the various communities in the constituency.

· “The Ocho Udo solidarity will go round the villages in my constituency to get the names of those whose parents are poor but have the zeal to acquire higher education.

“Ocho Udo would also collect the names of those that want to learn trade but cannot pay the agreement fees.

“As I am talking to you now, I have paid school fees for 21 people in my constituency.

We have seven communities in my constituency and we picked three persons from each community.

“Even if the fees were to be too much for me to pay, I would have contacted some non-governmental organisations that are already aware of the Ocho Udo (solidarity) to assist us,” he said.

The lawmaker said one of the campaign promises he made was to serve his people selflessly, assuring that he would ensure that he fulfilled the promises.

Nwamba said he did not seek the people’s mandate to enrich himself, but rather to contribute his quota towards alleviating the sufferings of poverty-stricken families in the constituency.
