The Kano State Government ,last  Saturday said it has confiscated illegal
drugs worth N300 million from dealers.

Gov.
Rabi’u Kwankwaso made this known while presenting N50, 000 cheques to each of
the 200 beneficiaries of the health micro-credit scheme who graduated at the
School of Hygiene, Kano.

He
stated that the State Government had embarked on “a war against the sale of
prohibited drugs as part of its renewed effort to check the menace of drug
abuse among the youths in the state.

Kwankwaso
said that the State Government had taken stringent measures to curtail the ugly
trend, especially among the youths.

He
maintained that the decision to close down the Sabon Gari drugs market was done
in good faith considering the danger posed by indiscriminate hawking of drugs.

“We
want to control the drug business in Kano, that is why we decided to seal up
Sabon Gari drugs market because it is unhealthy to allow people to trade in
medicines like any other common commodity, ‘’ he said.

He
said the State Government was now working with many other international donors
to improve the healthcare delivery system in the state.

“There
are more than 100 containers of various medical facilities coming to Kano,
donated by international donors.’’

He
explained that State Government had selected general hospitals in some local
government areas, including Gwarzo General Hospital for rehabilitation and
equipping.

He
charged the beneficiaries of the Lafiya Jari scheme to ensure that only
approved drugs were sold to members of the public.
