Fishermen Kill 15-Foot Python
Tragedy was averted recently in
Aminigboko community of Emughan, in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of
Rivers State as a 15 foot python which was terrorising the community was killed
by vigilant fishermen.
According to an elder from the community, Mr. Gospel Dema,
children who took advantage of the flood took time to go for a swim only to be
driven away by the python.
He said the children reported the development which led to it
being ambushed by some fishermen.
One of the fishermen who spoke to our correspondent, Mr.
Emmanuel Gibson said that on the day the reptile was killed, he was on his way
to gather his nets when all of a sudden; the snake appeared and moved towards
his direction.
Continuing, Mr. Gibson said he swam ashore and called on his
fellow fishermen who were around even as the snake also swam ashore and took a
position and was ready to attack.
He further explained that as soon as two of his colleagues
arrived, they all braved it and moved towards the fierce looking python.
He said when it became obvious that they were all over it,
the snake sprang to attack them and that it took several deep matchet cuts to
kill it.
Speaking on the incident, the community development committee
chairman of Aminigboko, Mr. Chukwudi Georgewill said that it was strange for a
python to be attacking people the way it did.
He thanked the bravery of the trio of Emmanuel Gibson, Israel
Young and Aselemi Wagbara for bringing to an end the terror of the python to
the community.
It could be recalled that early in the flood, the community
lost one Odighioye Monday Oyepho who drowned as he accompanied others for a
hunting expedition as he reportedly tried to swim after an animal.
