Coach Vows To Raise Weightlifting Standard In Rivers
Rivers State weightlifting Coach, Reginald Briggs, has restated his resolve to work towards raising the standard of the sport and Weightlifting Association in order to have its rightful place amongst other sports in the state.
Coach Briggs said this recently while speaking with Tidesports at the Alfred Diette Sports Complex, Port Harcourt.
According to him, in order to move the sport forward, he has started working on replacement of athletes that would participate in the forthcoming 15th National Schools Sports Festival to be hosted by Rivers State, next year.
He continued that there were few children presently on ground for grooming in preparation for the task ahead.
Coach Briggs, noted that the association would strictly follow the laid down rules by the National Federation of Schools Sports based on age bracket, between the ages of 12 to 15 allowed to participate in the fiesta.
He noted that the children could be used to replace those athletes who would finish their festival at “Eko 2012”, if groomed adequately.
They could be used as replacement for athletes that would no longer be eligible to participate at the 19th NSF scheduled to be hosted by Calabar, Cross Rivers State, in 2016.
He maintained that after the 18th NSF, the association would give the needed attention to talents already identified and those that would be discovered later, since it will be the first time weightlifting would take part in the schools sports fiesta.
