The Anambra State Government, has called for proactive and
collaborative measures in agricultural production to stave off imminent food
scarcity in the state.

The Secretary
to the State Government, Mr Oseloka Obaze, made the call in Awka recently at
the donation of relief materials to flood victims.

Obaze stressed
the need for adequate planning by government, coporate entities and individuals
to empower the farming population to revive agricultural activities to boost
food production.

“If we do not
plan adequately now, within the next nine months, the population in the state
that did not suffer directly the flood disaster, will be adversely affected.

“Many people
have lost their lives, property and cultivated farmlands to the flood disaster,
and all of us are affected because our food basket has been destroyed,”  he noted.

The secretary
said that government alone could not function and develop all sectors of the
economy without the active participation of the citizenry and organisations.

“There should
always be a symbiotic relationship between the government, the citizenry and
different organisations as government cannot function alone,” Obaze said.

Earlier, the
National Commander, War Veterans Welfare Association, Col. Emmanuel Ossai
(rtd), announced a donation of N100,000 and five bags of used clothes as the
association’s “widow’s mite” to the flood victims.

Ossai commended the state government for its prompt response
and assistance to the flood victims and appealed to Gov. Peter Obi to assist
members of the association to alleviate their “bitter hardship and suffering”.
