Amaechi Pledges To Donate More ICT Materials
The Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has promised to donate more computers and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based operational tools to the 115 beneficiaries of the state youth empowerment programme.
Amaechi, said this while presenting starter packs and other ICT tools to the graduands in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
The Governor who was represented by his deputy, Engr Tele Ikuru, noted that the beneficiaries were expected to carefully manage the computer centres for the next six months.
He explained that the objective was to encourage the beneficiaries to learn how to sustain a self-developed ICT business to reduce poverty and youth restiveness in the state.
The Governor who regretted the abuse of empowerment to the youth over the years, directed the relevant ministry to set up a committee that will monitor the ICT beneficiaries.
Amaechi, also called on beneficiaries to make best use of the opportunity, saying that the state will not be happy if they did not justify the opportunity.
He tasked the youth to demonstrate the habit of service and commitment in order to be self-reliant employers for sustainable growth.
He noted that the government can not handle the business of employment alone, hence the quest to encourage self-employment among the youth.
In his speech, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Sir Ownene Wonodi, described the empowerment scheme as a challenge to the youth to seek self-reliance, and dignity in labour.
Wonodi, said that the beneficiaries went through different skills including the ICT and computer management.
