Amaechi Mourns Prof Onuegbu

Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon.Chibuike Amaechi has expressed sadness over the sudden death of former Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Bernard Onuegbu who passed away a forthnight ago shortly after undergoing a surgery operation.

Governor Amaechi who paid a condolence visit to the country home of the univeristy don at Okporowo-Ogbakiri yesterday said the demise of Onuegbu was shocking to him and people of the state.

“The last time I saw him was in a meeting of Ogbakor Ikwerre and he didn’t look ill. So when you recieve this kind of death even you as a man will begin to worry”, Amaechi lamented.

He urged the family to repose their hope in God since Late Prof Onuegbu made his mark and would always be remembered positively by those who came by him.

Amaechi said he would immensely be missed in the University of Science and Techonology where he served as an agriculture expert, “he was dedicated to his duty as a professor in agric and he did the best he could in his field.”

Assuring the family of State Government’s continuous assistance, the Rivers State Chief Executive promised to award scholarship to the children in order to aid them further their education.

Responding on behalf of the family, younger brother to Prof. Onuegbu, Ven Napoleon Onuegbu thanked the Governor for the visit as it has strenghtened them in the time of grief.

He stated that the family was bouyed by the Govenor’s presence, while recalling that his elder brother had already recuperated from a surgical operation he had recently, but said his death came as a rude shock to them.

According to the Anglican priest, the family is consoled by the fact that, “he has played his card well and he is gone”.

He lauded the governor and his entourage for their kind gesture and said the challenge now was to ensure that the late univeristy don’s children were given good education to sustain the legacy of their late father.
