At least 267 women have tested positive to cancer in Ebonyi, Mrs Josephine Elechi, the wife of the state governor, has said.

Speaking at the launch of another round of free cancer screening in the state, Elechi said the high prevalence of the disease prompted the new round of screening.

She said the figure came from the 1,239 women screened during the previous exercise.

She called on corporate organisations, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to assist in ridding the society of cancer.

Also speaking, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Chinyere Nwankwo, described cancer as a dangerous ailment. Nwankwo called on women to always come out en-mass for such free screening and treatment.

The Medical Director of the National Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, Dr Sunday Adeoye, appealed to Nigerian women to always visit the hospital for free mammography which detects traces of cancer at the pre-malignant stage.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Celestina Okoro, thanked God for using Mrs Elechi to touch the lives of Ebonyi women.
