Rivers State Government has debunked insinuations in some
quarters that it plans to disband Sharks and Dolphins Football Clubs of Port
Harcourt due to their abysmal performance in the last football season.

Governor Chibuike Amaechi made this known at the weekend
during an interactive session with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and
Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) in Port Harcourt.

Governor Amaechi said the clarification become necessary
following unfounded rumours making the rounds that the state government plans
to disband the clubs.

“I want to state clearly here that we shall not disband
Sharks and Dolphins FCs for whatever reason, we shall continue to sponsor them
to compete for honours,” Amaechi said.

He explained that whether the teams win or lose, the state
government would ensure that they continue to carry the banner of the state,
noting that in sports you cannot win all the time.

The state Chief Executive also hinted that the Amaechi’s
Football Cup Competition would embrace Diobu axis of Port Harcourt when a
football pitch had been constructed and advised those in the area to be
patient.

The governor also encouraged the management of Sharks and
Dolphins FCs to utilise talents discovered locally and make them part of the
team to ensure that indigenes of the state have some sense of belonging.
