RSG Explains Low Flooding In Rivers
The Rivers State Government says its early intervention in
desilting some rivers and creeks in the state may have lessened the severity of
the on-going flooding in the state.
The commissioner for Infformation and Communications, Mrs.
Ibim Semenitari disclosed thus in a press briefing in Port Harcourt at
yesterday.
Mrs Semenitari said that on emergency committee has been
setup by the government to take care of victims of the flood disaster.
Mrs. Semenitari said that the state Governor, Rt. Hon.
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi had earlier setup
flood control committee led by Prof. Winston Bellgam which embarked on
disilting of creeks to properly channel water to the River.
She said that the situation would have been extended to the
larger rivers, but for the fact that it was under me exclusive list.
The commissioner said that the Government had setup on
emergency committee to cater for victims of the flood disaster through which
the affected poor local government areas of the state would benefit caps will
be setup while relief materials will be procured for victims.
She said that the Governor has directed the commissioner for
Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli to understudy the impact the flooding has on the
ecosystem.
Recording to her, he Governor is initiating a long term plan
to encure that the state is not affected again in the event that the dam in
Cameroun is opened again.
