Robbery: Enugu Assembly Tasks Governor
The Enugu State House of Assembly has adopted a motion
urging the State Government to seek for the deployment of soldiers and
policemen to robbery-prone areas of the state.
The assembly urged the government to approach the 82
Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu and the state police command to enforce
the motion.
The lawmakers said the security operatives would be
stationed permanently in the vulnerable spots on the Abakpa-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka road and the
Ugwuogo-Isiuzo road.
Presenting the motion, the sponsor, Chief Joseph Ugwumba
(PDP Enugu East-Rural), listed the danger zones to include the Iyioku
River-Ogbeke Nome, Ugwuogo-Isiuzo and Ugwuogo-Opi.
According to Ugwumba, the activities of robbers have stalled
socio-economic activities in the areas, resulting to a decrease in the state’s
internally-generated revenues.
He said if the prayers were not answered, it would indicate
that the government had failed the citizens in its social responsibility of
protecting their lives and property.
Supporting the motion, Chief Micheal Onyeze, (PDP-Igboeze
North 1), lamented that the new road opened to boost agriculture and economic
activities had become a safe haven for hoodlums.
He said that a pregnant woman was recently raped and killed
on the road.
Contributing, Mr Edward Ubosi (PDP- Enugu East Urban),
narrated the agony of the road users.
Mr Ikechukwu Ezeugwu (PDP-Udenu), said that since the motion
was not contentious, the members should support it so that the money used to
rehabilitate the road would not be in vain.
The Speaker, Mr Eugene Odo, commended the sponsors for their
contributions to the motion.
Odo also directed the assembly’s committee on education to
investigate the performance of contractors handling ETF projects in the state.
He decried the situation where contractors collected
mobilisation fees but failed to commence work on such projects.
The assembly adjourned sitting to October 18.
