The long expected law harmonising taxes and levies in Rivers State currently before the state House of Assembly will be concluded in about a fortnight.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Amachree revealed this on Thursday while speaking at the 28th Annual General Meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria  (MAN) Rivers /Balyelsa State Branch  in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Rt Hon. Amachree, who was represented by Hon. Jones Ogbondah at the occasion, explained that contrary to insinuations that the Bill had been dumped, it was actually sent to the House by the executive few days ago.

He noted that it had already passed the first reading and now on its second reading.

He said that when passed into law, the bill will enhance the operations of manufacturers and urged MAN members to exercise patience while condemning the attitudes of those he described as agents of darkness.

Earlier in her speech, the Chairman of MAN, Rivers/Bayelsa States, Mrs Emilia E. Akpan, had identified multiple taxation by all tiers of government in Rivers State as one of the key problems hampering business operations in the state.

According to her, “this manufacturing sector that provides employment for thousands of Nigerians has become endangered. The reasons for this state of affairs is not far-fetched.
