Police Foil Ahoada Jail Break …FG Tightens Security

Rivers State Police Command Saturday confirmed averting the jail break at the Federal Prisons, Ahoada, headquarters of Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ben Ugwuegbulam, who confirmed the incident to The Tide said that at about 1700hours on Saturday, some inmates at the prison attempted to breakout of the prison.
Ugwuegbulam stated that the police and other security operatives cordoned off the area, adding that two inmates were killed during the operation while others suffered various degrees of injuries.
The police spokesperson added that the situation has since been brought under control, stressing that investigations were on to ascertain the circumstances that may have given impetus to the inmates attempt to break the jail.
When contacted on telephone, the state Controller of Prisons, Mr Ogundana refused to comment on the matter, but simply requested our reporter to see him today in his office in Port Harcourt.
Consequently, the Federal Government has beefed up security in all prisons in Nigeria following the jail break incident at Ahoada Prisons, Rivers State, in which properties and some vital documents were burnt by the prisoners on Saturday.
The Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, stated this yesterday, and condemned in strong terms, the jail break attack by the prisoners, adding that government has beefed up security around the prison to restore peace and order in the area.
Moro, in a statement by signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. George Udoh, disclosed that six prisoners, who were critically injured while being prevented by the security officers in the process of escaping from the prison, were taken to the hospital, adding that they are now back in the prison.
He added that only four prisoners escaped during the attack.
