NLC Tasks FG On Poverty Reduction
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has tasked the various tiers of government on the need to formulate policies that will greatly reduce the high rate of poverty in the country.
The chairman of the NLC in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Unyime Usoro stated this while speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday during a visit to the state.
Comrade Usoro said that poverty was thriving in the country because resources were not optimally harnessed to address the issue of poverty reduction.
He said “our resources are looted and wealth in control of few privileged Nigerians”
The labour leader said that instituting good governance, accountability in public office and zero tolerance for corruption were panacea for poverty reduction in Nigeria.
Comrade Usoro said “when political leadership is transparent and accountable job creation will naturally follow to minimize poverty rate among Nigerians”.
He advocated for sustainable usage of natural resources in the country in order to reduce poverty stressing that massive agricultural programme will boost food production and create jobs to reduce the level of poverty.
The Labour leader said poverty level is even higher within oil bearing communities and indigenes of such communities wallow in abject poverty due to the absence of cultivable farm lands.
