A Port Harcourt based legal Practitioner and human rights
crusader, Barr. ThankGod Nmeh, has said that only the prevalence of the rule of
law would usher in giant developmental strides in the Nigerian nation-state.

Barr. Nmeh, who stated this while chatting with The Tide in
Port Harcourt at the weekend, regretted that the violation of the rule of law
had been the country’s undoing in the past 52 years of independence.

He pointed out that a society which relegated the rule of
law to the background should not expect to make progress.

The legal practitioner lamented that corruption, visionless
leadership and weak judiciary had been the bane of Africa’s largest democracy.

According to him, “the Nigerian nation had been bedeviled by
bad leadership, corruption and weak judiciary.

He regretted that the years of military rule had worsened
corruption, enthroned injustice and made the judiciary weak.

The Port Harcourt based lawyer attributed the rise of
violence in the country to the emasculation of justice and the prevalence of
self-help. He said at 52, Nigeria was old enough to build a virile state where
law and order prevailed.

Barr. Nmeh noted that upsurge of militia in  different parts of the country was indicative
of  frustration that had become the lot
of the people.

He stated that Nigerians were looking for a just and an
egalitarian society and  lamented
that  the nation was still crawling at
52.

The lawyer, however, urged Nigerians to contribute their
quota towards making the country great.
