Former Rep Hails FG Floods Relief Package
Former member of the House of Representatives, has Chief
Stanley Ohajuruka, commended the Federal Government for taking steps to
rehabilitate victims of floods across the country.
Ohajuruka told newsmen in Umuahia that the funds should be given directly to
the victims to avoid misapplication.
He said that it might be counter-productive if the funds
were given to state governments.
“The Federal Government should be commended for the steps it
has taken to re-settle the victims but I must say that the funds should not be
given to the states to avoid the politicisation of the situation.
“Instances abound where monies meant for one thing were used
for another, so the Federal Government should set up a special task force to
handle the funds,” he said.
President Goodluck Jonathan had in a nationwide broadcast on
Tuesday approved N17.6 billion in direct financial assistance to the affected
states.
Of the sum, the states would receive N13.3 billion while
federal agencies responsible for disaster management will receive N4.3 billion.
