Flood: Obi Converts Lodge To Refugee Camp
Governor Peter Obi has directed the Secretary to Anambra
State Government, Mr Oseloka Obaze, to turn the Governor’s Lodge in Onitsha
into a camp for flood victims if necessary.
The governor issued the directive in Onitsha following the massive flooding in five local
government areas in the state.
The governor had cancelled his trip to Mexico and the
Independence Day ceremonies because of the emergency.
Obi received complaints of inadequate accommodation during a
tour of some public buildings used to shelter victims at Omunwa Egboka Primary
School, behind the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity.
He said government would continue to feed and provide for
the victims considering that they were faced with a natural disaster, which was
not of their own making..
“Few weeks ago, governors of the south-east sent money to
Haiti to help them rebuild after the earthquake of 2010.
“If we could do it to them, we must do more for our people
that elected us to serve them,” Obi said.
He assured the people that government would always support
them at all times, including their rehabilitation after the floods had passed.
He warned all those handling relief materials to deploy them
appropriately or face the wrath of God and called on the church, local
organisations, individuals and international organisations to assist the state
in any way they could for the sake of humanity.
The governor promised to provide security for the camps and
described the development as “Anambra’s turbulent moment”.
