Faced with the non availability of motorable roads to enable
them transport their farm produce to other neighbouring communities, the people
of Emelego in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State have called
on the state government to come to their aid.

Speaking with The Tide in Abua over the weekend, a plaintain farmer from the community, Mrs Itotenaan Frank Odoh said that the development had prevented farmers from transporting their produce to Abua Central, Port Harcourt and Bayelsa State among other communities.

she said, the cost of transporting farm produce through
alternative transport means was taking an unbearable toll on their finances
hence the need for the state government to extend the ongoing road construction
projects to the Odual axis of the state.

Odoh himted her community had been using seasonal feeder
roads for a long time in transporting their farm produce and during the raining
season, the farmers find it almost impossible to move their produce outside
their communities.

She regretted that
farmers in the area during the raining season experience a lot of losses
as most of their crops were perishable ones, like plaintain, banana, pineapple
and orange, among others

She noted Odual is one of the major producers of plaintain
in the state and the product has been the major mainstay of the people.

While commending the Rivers State governor, Rt. Hon.
Chibuike Amaechi for his aggressive rural road construction projects, in some
local government areas, Mrs Odoh appealed to the government to extend such
magnanimity to the people of Odual.
