A Beninoise cook, Guy Kouton, was on Tuesday arraigned for
allegedly stealing his employer’s jewellery valued at N15 million.

Kouton, 45, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and
theft before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Julius Oyakhilome, told the court that
the defendant on September 16 conspired with others still at large to steal the
Jewellery of Mrs Kehinde Phillips.

He said that the offence was committed at the residence of
the complainant at No. 19, Berla Visita Cresent, Banana Island, Lekki, Lagos.

He said that the accused was consequently handed over to the
Police when the theft was discovered.

The prosecutor said that Kouton was, however, released by
the Police on the promise that he would return the stolen Jewellery.

Oyakhilome said that the defendant, however, failed to
return the stolen items which prompted his prosecution.

He said that the offence contravened Sections 409 and 285
(8) of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State 2011.

The magistrate, Mrs. A.F. Botoku granted the accused bail in
the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

She, however, said that if the prosecutor failed to produce
his witnesses at the next adjourned date, the case would be struck out.

Botoku adjourned the case to October, 22 for trial.
