ALUU 4: TUC Seeks Justice
The National President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC)
Comrade Peter Esele has called for justice over the four Uniport students
killed at Aluu community near Choba Rivers State.
Comrade Peter Esele made the call in Port Harcourt while
speaking to newsmen after a condolence visit to one of the bereaved student
families yesterday.
Comrade Esele said the killing was condemnable in its
entirety, stressing that the union cannot comprehend the primary motive behind
the killing.
He said “justice must be done to the four students, the
organised labour demands justice, especially to the family of our comrade and
mentor, Comrade Biringa Onyema Stephen of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior
Staff Association (PENGASSAN)”.
The TUC boss said it was appropriate for the labour movement
to share the grief with their senior colleague whose son was among the four
students killed.
He said the killing has raised so many unanswered questions
for the appropriate authorities. According to him, the organised labour demands
answers from the authorities to avoid a bandwagon effect from the killing.
The labour leader said the incident was unfortunate and
portends danger for the nation, stressing that the University of Port
Harcourt killing was coming on the
heels of the Mubi, Adamawa State killing where 41 students were similarly
killed.
He tasked the various tiers of government to put necessary
measures in place to check the unnecessary waste of innocent lives of Nigerian
youths.
He called for a change of character among the youths and a
return to core values to promote peaceful co-existence, Esele said that there
was systemic failure in the society giving rise to people not believing in the
core values of the society and system.
Earlier, Comrade Biringa Onyema Stephen, father of one of
the four students killed commended the organised labour for standing with the
family in their demand for justice over the killing.
He said injury to one is injury to all, stressing a change
of mindset in the society.
The bereaved family called on the security agencies to carry
out full investigation into the circumstances leading to the killing to the
four students at Aluu and bring those responsible to justice.
