13 Ebonyi Debate Team Members Get Scholarship
The Ebonyi State Government last Wednesday in Abakaliki
awarded scholarships to 13 members of the state debate team.
Governor Martin Elechi said the scholarships were to
encourage the team for its outstanding performances in both national and
international debate competitions.
The governor was represented by the Secretary to the State
Government, Mr Fidel Mbam.
According to Elechi, the scholarship will enable the
beneficiaries to pursue first degree programmes in their chosen courses in any
university of their choice in Nigeria.
He added that the gesture would fast-track the expansion and
development of the intellectual capacities of the beneficiaries and advised
them to utilise the offer effectively.
The governor also urged the awardees to be good ambassadors of
the state in their respective universities and commit their time to their
studies.
“We urge you to be worthy ambassadors of Ebonyi State and to
be dedicated to your chosen courses of study.
“The state expects much from you and you cannot afford to
disappoint us,’’ Elechi said.
He commended the team for the many laurels it had won for
the state at local and international debate competitions, pointing out that
government was using the inter-schools debate to promote the culture of reading
and research among secondary school students in the state.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to our correspondent
expressed joy over the development and promised not to disappoint the state.
