‘Flood Has Distorted Sports In States’
The Anambra State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Edozie
Aroh, has bemoaned the paralysing nature of the flood situation in some parts
of the state, which he said had disrupted sporting activities.
He told newsmen yesterday in Awka that the flood had led to
the closure of schools in the affected areas. Aroh said that students from
schools in Anambra West, Anambra East, Ogbaru, Anyamelum and other affected
local government areas (LGAs) could not fully participate in sporting
activities.
“Schools are shut down due to flood and most of the students
are in the various displaced persons’ camps, the growth process is distorted
especially now that there is emphasis on school games.
“A lot of potentials could not be exhibited at the just
concluded state school sports festival, but we will see how we can make it up
when normalcy returns.”
In the same vein, Chinedu Obidigwe, the Chairman of Anambra
East LGA said it was regrettable that attention of the council had to be
diverted to disaster management. “It is a very sad moment our communities in
the area have been submerged, we no longer engage in sporting activities, the
children cannot freely participate in games,’’he said.
The Chairman of Oyi LGA, Mr Charles Okafor, whose council
emerged the overall second in the state sports festival, noted that all
activities had been grounded.
He said the requisite facility for sports in the area had
been completely submerged, thereby making it impossible for budding talents to
strut their stuff.
