The Nigeria Civil Service Union has appealed to the Federal Government to take urgent measures to provide shelter at affordable rates for civil servants in the country.

Malam Kiri Shuaibu-Mohammed, the National President of the union, made the call in Abuja at the Centenary celebration and inauguration of the union’s national secretariat, recently.

Shuaibu-Mohammed claimed that the Federal Government, through its agencies, had derailed in its efforts to provide houses for its citizens.

“Housing estates intentionally meant for the low income Nigerians have been commercialised and sold at exorbitant rates.

“The little efforts by these helpless and downtrodden people to provide shelters for themselves are being put to a stop by the ongoing demolitions, especially in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).’’

He called on the government to stop the demolitions and take urgent “measures to provide shelter at affordable rates for the people.’’

Shuaibu-Mohammed expressed concern about the current challenges threatening the existing peace in the country.

He said the spate of bombings in different parts of the country and killing of innocent citizens should stop.

The union leader called on the government and security agencies to brace and confront the insecurity situation head on, and urged all citizens to be security-conscious.

“I hereby call on all Nigerians to join hands to fight this ugly development in order to redeem our image across the globe,’’ he said.

On infrastructure, Shuaibu-Mohammed applauded the government for the ongoing rehabilitation of rail lines across the country.

He called on the government to fast-track the project and develop a culture of constructing new rail lines on a yearly basis to reach the rural areas for easy evacuation of farm produce.

He also called on the government to address the issue of epileptic electricity supply as it had made life unbearable for Nigerians.

Our correspondent reports that the event was attended by representatives of the Federal Government and the FCT, NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar and TUC President Peter Esele, among others.
