UNICEF Harps On School Mapping
The United Nation International Children Education Fund
(UNICEF) Desk Officer on Education Intervention in Ebonyi State, Mrs Beatrice
Echeagu says that school mapping would aid education development in the state.
Echeagu told The Tide in Abakaliki that the workshop that was organised by the
state Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNICEF had 36 participants.
According to her, the knowledge acquired by the participants
if properly utilised would assist in the speedy development of education in the
state, pointing out that the event was aimed at developing the capacity of
those involved in school mapping.
Echeagu said school mapping provided government and school
planners the requisite knowledge on school location, the distribution of
teachers and teaching aids to the schools, noting that school mapping dealt
with spatial distribution of schools within a giving geographical location.
She said that school mapping involved the way schools were
sited, in accordance with the population of people in a given geographical
location.
She also said that school mapping enhanced the data base of
the education management information system.
“The information generated by the education management
information system through this school mapping enables government to plan well.
“It affords government reliable data for the equitable
siting of schools and the distribution of infrastructure to schools,” the
UNICEF desk Officer explained.
