Two Escape Lynching For Killing Vultures

Two persons narrowly escaped lynching by an angry mob in
Nkerefi, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, for killing vultures.

According to a police statement, the mob descended on the
two men, Wale Alabi and Polycarp Onyia, for allegedly using a poisoned
substance to kill 23 vultures living in a shrine in Eke Nkerefi.

The statement, signed by Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the spokesman of
the police command in the state, said the incident attracted the attention of
the villagers when they noticed that the vultures that usually perched on the
ancestral tree located in the market started dying in numbers.

Amaraizu said the mob attacked the duo when they noticed
they were packing the dead vultures into their sacks.

He said it took the intervention of the police to save the
victims, adding that the command was investigating the incident.
