Rotary Spends N2.8m On School Renovation
The Rotary Club of Umudike Central has earmarked N2.8
million for the renovation of Umuariagha Community Primary School in Abia
State.
The new President of the club, Dr. Cliff Nnaedozie, said
this in an interview with The Tide shortly after his investiture in Umuahia on
Saturday.
The ceremony which included the conferment of different
awards on some eminent Nigerians and the induction of two new members, took
place at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
He said the money would be used to purchase books for the
school library, provide bore hole and a VIP toilet.
Nnaedozie said that the club was disturbed by the poor state
of the school, adding that the intervention was to upgrade the school to modern
standard and make it conducive for teaching and learning.
The immediate-past president of the club, Mr John Nwuche,
said the club was moved by the pathetic condition of the school and the
difficulties the pupils were facing.
‘’Last year, when we visited the school, we saw that all the
pupils were sitting on bare floor because there was no furniture,’’ Nwuche
said.
He said this prompted the club to raise money from among its
members and corporate organisations so as to intervene.
“We got money and donated 24 benches to the school and also
painted a one-block classroom,’’ he added, pointing out that the Vice
Chancellor of the university, Prof. Hilary Edeoga, received the ‘Excellent
Performance Award’’ at the ceremony.
One of the inductees, Mrs Onyinye Ralph-Nwachukwu, said that
she had associated with the club for more than 10 years, adding that the club
‘’helps to bring out the humanness in its members’’.
‘’It is not just a social club but a humanitarian
organisation that sets out to help the less privileged in the society; it helps
you to devote your time, talent and treasure to serve humanity; it is not
exclusively for the rich,’’ she said.
