The Lagos State Police Command has made a major breakthrough
in crime fighting with the recovery of over 10,000 rounds of ammunition and
other weapon of mass destruction in the state.
The Commissioner, Lagos State Police Command, Umar Manko,
who paraded three armed robbery suspects on Tuesday in connection with the arms
and ammunition recovered, stated that the weapons were the biggest cache
recovered from criminals in the history of the state.
The items recovered included nine AK 47 rifles, two General
Purpose Machine Guns, one Rocket Propelled Grenade launcher, 225 AK 47 live
ammunition, 260 rounds of GPMG live ammunition and five dynamites with detonators.
The suspects – Uche Okeagbu, Emmanuel Ezeani and Chinoso
Nwaugwu – all 23 years old, are said to be notorious robbers who also
participated in the deadly Sunday September 9, 2012 robbery in Lagos State in
which three policemen and no fewer than three civilians were killed.
The police also recovered two buses used by the armed
robbery gang as their armoury.
Also recovered was the robbers’ operational vehicle, a
metallic brown Infinity G35 car with registration number Lagos GGE 808 AAA,
fully fitted with ultra ray sensor cameras used by the gang to monitor the
police during armed robbery operations.
Manko stated that the arrest of the deadly gang was a
determination by his leadership to rid Lagos State of criminals.
He stated that the suspects were arrested on September 23
following a tip off.
Manko said: “The OC SARS, Abba Kyari, acted on a tip off and
arrested one Uche Okeagbu at Ilemba Hausa area Ajangbadi Lagos.
“During interrogation, Uche gave useful information that led
to the arrest of Chinoso and Emmanuel.
“Their confessions led to the recovery of the cache of arms
and ammunition.”
The police stated that the gang had attacked residents and
banks in Ibadan, Uyo, Kwara, Akure, Oshogbo, Achi, Okene and Lagos State before
they were arrested.
The gang had allegedly made more than N5 million from armed
robbery in the past two years.
Some of the banks they attacked included First Bank, UBA,
GTB, Diamond Bank and Skye bank.
Manko urged residents to cooperate with the police as the
command is determined to halt crime in the state.
