NUT In Enugu Threatens Strike Action

The Nigeria Union of Teachers
(NUT) Enugu State branch has threatened to embark on industrial strike if the
state government reneges on paying the balance of Teachers Enhancement
Allowance (TEA) to its members in the state.

This was stated in a statement
issued by the National Coordinator of the union, Comrade Julius Tola.

Comrade Tola said that the union
was requesting for the complete payment of the 17.5 per cent outstanding
Teachers Enhancement Allowance the Enugu State government has refused to
implement.

The Union Coordinator said the NUT
had passed a resolution to embark on strike for a long time, stressing that IT
would have commenced strike in some states that have refused to implement the
payment of the teachers enhancement allowance some months ago, but the union’s
leaders felt that it was possible to dialogue with some state governors on the
need for the implementation first.

Comrade Tola said that the union
had decided that if by the end of September, the state government fails to
comply with the agreement reached with it, teachers in Enugu State would embark
on strike.

He said “as we know, when strike
comes from teachers it permeates the whole stratum of society, but NUT is not
looking for where we can embarked on strike, as the union is ready for dialogue
with open doors”.

The NUT national co-ordinator said
that some teachers still believed that strike was necessary for the union to
achieve the full implementation of the allowance for teachers in some states.
