Ebonyi Mass Literacy Agency Admits 4,000 Learners

The Director, Ebonyi Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education, Mrs Ngozi Okike, said the agency had admitted no fewer than 4,000 learners into its continuing education programme.

Okike told journalists in Abakaliki, on Wednesday that those admitted were for the 2011/2012 academic year.

She said the agency was determined to promote mass literacy, adult and non-formal education in the state.

She noted that the agency had made giant strides since its inception in 1997, adding: “our mandate is to eradicate illiteracy in the state.

“Through the various academic programmes we introduced for these adult learners, most of them can now read and write very well.

“I am glad to inform you that the agency had produced graduates some of whom are employed by the state government,’’ she said.

Okike said that the agency had learning centres across the 13 local government areas of the state with dedicated facilitators.

She explained that the curriculum and time-table for the learners were designed to suit their status as adults.

“Their curriculum is learner-centred, since they are adults who have other things to do. We fix their time -tables in order to suit their situations because we take cognisance of their peculiarities

“You pet and pamper them in order to achieve the desired objectives.’’
