Delta To Relocate, Compensate Flood Victims

The Delta Government on Tuesday said victims affected by the
flood would be relocated and compensated.

The Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Utuama, made the statement
in Asaba when he led some members of the Executive Council on a solidarity
visit to some affected areas.

Utuama said that the government was pained about the
unexpected hardship the flood had imposed on victims, adding that government
had also set up a committee to handle the situation.

The deputy governor said the displaced persons would be
relocated to schools temporarily, while relief materials would be provided for
them.

He stated that the committee would also work out measures to
avert a recurrence.

At Ifeanyichukwu Nwagbo Street, off Government House Road,
Mr Andrew Nkwo, who spoke on behalf of the victims, said more than 500 houses
were submerged.

He said that property worth billions of naira had been
destroyed, and called for quick intervention by the state government.

He also appealed for an embankment to be constructed at the
bank of River Niger to forestall future occurrence.
