CPC Impounds N.5m Fake Canned Fish
The South-East Zonal office of the Consumer Protection
Council [CPC] has impounded various imported food items in Aba, Abia State for
failing to meet its labelling standard.
The zonal coordinator Mr Tamuno Tamunokonbia made this known
in an interview with The Tide in Awka recently.
Tamunokonbia said the items, including 731 cartons of canned
Mackerel in tamato sauce valued N3.5 million, were impounded at the Cemetery
Road market, Aba.
He said the council acted on intelligence report that a
Mackerel product was circulating in the markets.
Consumers informed the council that there was a certain
canned fish product that is presently in the market which does not have enough
information on the label.
“Every product fit for consumption should meet the labelling
standards. It should have NAFDAC and batch numbers, production and expiry
dates, the manufacturer and his address amongst others.
“But as you can see, this one does not have NAFDAC number.
It means that it was not certified for consumption,” he said.
The coordinator said the council was able to locate the
warehouse where the goods were kept after a painstaking investigation.
He noted that the council was determined to rid markets in
the zone of unwholesome products and encouraged the consumers to forward their
complaints whenever they were not satisfied with products or services.
The Tide recalls that the CPC sealed four filling stations
in Aba last month for allegedly selling adulterated diesel.
