Constitution Amendment Should Address Peoples’ Basic Needs – NCP
The National Conscience Party (NCP) has called for the inclusion of the basic needs of the people as part of the constitution amendment.
NCP National Chairman, Yunisa Tanko, who made the call during an interview with The Tide’s Source, added that that would make the leaders accountable to the people and keep to their promises.
“We do need an amendment to the constitution, especially with regards to chapter two of the constitution which deals with the basic needs of the people; housing, jobs, good roads, schools, health care”, he said.
The source reports that Chapter two of the 1999 Constitution being reviewed by the National Assembly, deals with the fundamental objective and directive principles of the state policy.
“Basic communication for the people must be made justifiable so that leaders can be held accountable to their campaign promises,” he said.
Tanko also called on the National Assembly to look into the area that dealt with the registration and de-registration of political parties.
“This, we believe, will ensure a multi democratic system where one single political party will not dominate others and the views of everybody are carried along .
“It will also reduce militarisation of the electoral system,” he said.
On the Local Government Law, Tanko advised that the law should be reinforced to enhance the people’s basic needs at the grass roots so that they could enjoy the dividends of democracy to the people.
