Sokoto Street Wins Amaechi Cup’s N10m
It was on unbelievable atmosphere at the No1 Field, in Port
Harcourt Town as the finalists of the maiden street football competition for
clubs in Port Harcourt Old Township and Borokiri area of Port Harcourt City, tagged Amaechi Cup,
Reclamation Road and Sokoto Street, on Saturday battled for the ultimate prize
of the tournament.
At stake were the N10 million and N5 million prize money for
overall winners and runners up respectively.
Both teams battled hard and long with neither giving no
quarters as the match ended scoreless within regulation time.
The lottery of penalty kicks was needed to Separate both
teams and allot the prizes at stake.
As the kicks ensued, it was obvious that neither side wanted
to settle for second best even if the prize money was N5 million, a prize not
available in Nigeria’s premier league.
However after 11 penalty kicks and perfect conversions,
something had to give in the 12th kick.
Reclamation Street’s Soni stepped up for his second round of
kicks only to see the hitherto keeper Ugo Parry to safety. It was now
between keeper Uche and Allwell to save
and give the day to their sides, respectively.
Finally, Allwell played well to beat keeper Uche and give
victory and N10 million to his team, Sokoto Street, christened Tripolians.
Earlier in the day, Tournament favourites, Station Road
team, aka Aresenal Boys, beat their Nembe Street counterparts 3-0 to win the
third place match at the sum of N3 million prize money.
The highlights of the closing ceremony of the tournament
sponsored by Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon
Amaechi and attended by the Governor, PDP Deputy National Chairman, Dr
Sam Sam Jaja, Commissioner for Sports, Fred Igwe, top politicians, former Super
Eagles Coach, Shaibu Amodu, Monday Sinclair and other football lovers, included
