RSG Demolishes Rumuosi Timber Market
A popular market in Akpor Kingdom that serves the building
materials need of developers, especially wood and roofing materials, at the
Rumuosi Timber Market was last week demolished.
The demolition exercise, The Tide gathered, was carried out
by the combined team of Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority, the
Obio/Akpor Council with some armed security operatives.
A visit to the area showed that no single shed was spared in
the exercise, as everything was pulled down.
The reason for the sudden demolition of the market could not
be immediately ascertained, but traders in the market said it may not be
unconnected with the current urban Renewal programme of the Rivers State
Government in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor.
Other areas affected by the exercise are the Osun/Oshogbo
Motor Park and some mechanic garages that have shanties and temporary
structures as well as other business structures along the area.
Some traders that do business, as well as buyers have
expressed difficulties that they now face in the businesses, as there is no
ready alternative place to fall back on.
One of the timber suppliers that operate within the area,
Mr. Azuwena Woke said he finds things difficult within these few days of
demolition with respect to quick supply of wood to his clients within the Akpor
axis, as he visits distant place to convey timber on bad roads.
