Rotary President Laments Polio Scourge

Nigeria has no reason being among the three countries of the
world with the Polio disease, Chief Okwun Omeaku has said.

Making the assertion during his installation as the current
President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Central, District 9140 in Port
Harcourt, Rotarian Omeaku attributed the existence of the polio disease in the
country to poor education on how to eradicate the disease.

He explained that the cases of Afghanistan and Pakistan
which are the remaining two countries with the polio disease were
understandable as the effects of war in these countries were still robbing off
on them.

He, however, disclosed that polio eradication was one of the
focus of the club in the 2012/2013 rotary year urging the government to create
an enabling environment to Rotarians to operate as they are honest and
transparent people.

The Port Harcourt Central President said Chlorine tablets
which could be used to get clean water were available but with a lot of
inhibitions there was no way such free packages could be brought to the
country.

Other areas of focus in furtherance of the rotary ideals
include, water and sanitation, Education and Literacy, disease prevention and
treatment, material and childcare, economic and community development, peace
and conflict prevention and treatment, he disclosed.

He enjoined Nigerians to make love, peace and tolerance
their guiding principles stressing that “If we have love in our hearts and
embrace peace and tolerate one another, what we are talking about through
rotary will just be easy for every person to understand”.
