NURTW Decries Enugu-PH Expressway
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has
decried the deplorable state of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
In a statement, chairman of the union, Comrade Sunny Nwakodo
said the poor state of the road had adversely affected businesses of the union
members and urged the federal government to repair the road.
He stated that motorists are suffering seriously. “We now
spend double to buy fuel on one trip than what we were spending under normal
situation”, he said.
The unionist said that the bad road had made motorists
travelling on the Port Harcourt –Enugu Expressway divert to different routes to
avoid the bad nature of the road.
The drivers of heavy duty trucks and articulated vehicles
were facing greater ordeal on the road as many now spent about four and half
hours on a journey from Port Harcourt to Enugu and other neighbouring states.
He said motorists travelling from Port Harcourt to Aba to
Umuahia now spend about three hours as against the usual one hour stressing
that the development had made motorists to spend more money on fuel as they now
spent longer time on the road. He said hoodlums have taken advantage of the
deplorable condition of the road to attack and dispossess travelers of their
money and valuables.
The union leader appealed to the federal government to
consider the plight of motorists as well as passengers and come to their
rescue.
