The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Rivers State
Sector Command has presented a Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme
(RTSSS) certificate to the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission
(NDDC) for its Mass Transit Scheme.

Speaking during the
presentation of the certificate Friday in Port Harcourt, the FRSC Sector
Commander, Rivers State, Dr. Kayode Olagunju said the scheme was initiated in
2007 to ensure safety on the roads.

According to him,
the essence of this scheme is to regulate, ensure safety and standardise fleet
operators in the country as well as check the excesses of transport operators
which often lead to wanton loss of lives and property.

The sector commander stressed the need for the management of
fleet operations to be left in the hands of professionals.

Dr. Olagunju said that the scheme was categorized into three
broad groups which include, Category A with operators with at least 100
vehicles, category B which is between 25 and 99 vehicles while category C is
less than 25 vehicles.

“In each group, three classes have been identified as class
A,B and C depending on the level of compliance by the fleet operators and
certified fleet operators”. He, however, said that the operators stand the risk
of decertification if they fail to sustain their compliance level.

The representative of the NDDC Mass Transit Scheme, Hon.
Richmond Nwangwe said that the management
was happy with the FRSC for finding them worthy to be certified.

Hon. Nwangwe also urged members of the public to beware of
hoodlums who are now using NDDC buses for intra city transport, stressing that
NDDC Mass Transit Scheme is for inter state transport.

He also said that the NDDC transport scheme has checked
unemployment among youths in the region.
