Head of Chancery, High Commission of India, Mr Rakesh Sharma
has disclosed that the commission has put in place plans to celebrate India’s
65th Independence anniversary in Lagos State.

Sharma told newsmen in Lagos that the event slated for Aug.
15 would provide the Indian community in Lagos the opportunity to socialise and
interact with their Nigerian friends.

“The India community in Lagos will on this important day be
joining other sons and daughters of India, home and across the world in
celebration. “Because of India’s strong relations with Nigeria Government and
the people, we are again as in the past years, bringing Indians and Nigerians
together,” he said.

Sharma, who is also the commission’s first secretary, said
India’s National Flag would be hoisted at the mission’s office in Lagos, as a
mark of honour for the country’s Independence Day.

He added that the ceremony would bring together chief
executive officers of Indian companies and their Nigerian counterparts.

Sharma said such “coming together” would further promote
cultural, political and socio-economic relations between both countries.

“India strongly believes in Nigeria as a strategic partner
in Africa. So, we the people here will always celebrate whatever is being
celebrated in the home country here. “Through such events, we have always
gotten assurances of the promising mutual relations between our two countries,”
he said.
