Group Wants Speedy Work On Second Niger Bridge
The Campaign for Democracy (CD), Anambra chapter, wants the
Federal Government to hasten the construction of the Second Niger Bridge
because of its economic benefits to the country.
In a statement in Onitsha, Anambra State, the CD, a civil
society group, argued that the bridge was necessary to boost commerce in the
South-East, South-South and North-Central geo-political zones.
The statement was signed by Mr Vincent Ezekwueme and Rev.
Jude Enemuochukwu, the CD’s Chairman and Public Relations Officers (PRO)
respectively.
It recalled that the construction of the bridge was part of
President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign promises.
The construction of the “2nd Niger Bridge is part of the
electioneering promise of Mr President during his 2011 presidential campaign in
Onitsha.
“We are urging Mr President to expedite action to fulfill
that promise and we want to see things on ground that point to that
direction,’’ the CD said.
However, it congratulated the president for completing the
dredging of the River Niger and the rehabilitation of the Onitsha River Port
within a record time.
“We welcome you, Mr President, to Anambra on August 30 as
you come to commission the Onitsha River Port, Orient Petrol Refinery, SAB-miller
Breweries and other numerous projects,’’ the CD said and extolled Anambra’s
Governor Peter Obi over what it described as his sincerity and transparency in
handling the affairs of the state.
It however reminded Obi of the need for him to immediately repair
deplorable roads in many of the state’s rural areas, especially in Mkpologwu,
Akpo, Achina and Umuchu roads.
The CD said that the bad roads in the state had become
“death traps’’ to road users, especially whenever it rained.
