Enugu Approves N2bn For Workers’ Housing

The Enugu State Government has approved a N2 billion loan offer from the Federal Mortgage Bank (FMB), for the development of the Enugu State Workers Estate at Ogbeke Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area of the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr Chuks Ugwoke who disclosed this while briefing the press on the outcome of a meeting of the State Executive Council, said the project, which would be executed by two estate developers, Ceebt World Development and Kayllods Limited, will consist of two bedrooms, 3-bedroom bungalows, 4-bedroom duplexes and 2-bedroom block of flats.

He said that the housing project was in line with the governor’s determination to provide affordable and decent accommodation to workers in the state.

Ugwoke further disclosed that the council also approved the sum of N255 million for the deployment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

He said that the project which would be handled by AFRI HUB Nigeria will consist of six hundred work stations and one digital library with 30 computers.

According to him, the project would also include seven multi-media classrooms each with thirty computers, a cyber café center with one hundred work stations and also provide hours of free browsing for students.

Also at the meeting, the council approved the installation of additional one hundred and seventy-eight units of solar powered bus shelters within Enugu metropolis for the comfort of commuters, Ugwoke further said.

The over N472 million contract awarded to Edwin-Rose and Sons Nigeria Limited will cover the three local government areas of Enugu North, Enugu South and Enugu East.

Mr. Ugwoke explained that eighty units would be constructed under the first phase of the project, adding that when completed, the modern bus shelter will add to the beauty of the city and provide comfort to the commuters and pedestrians.

“In its resolve to wage very serious and relentless war against filth and keep the state clean, the council approved the sum of N375 million for the procurement of ten additional numbers of Olympus compactor trucks for effective disposal of refuse in the state. This is in addition to twenty-five compactors bought by government in 2007 and 2010 respectively as well as two skippers for refuse disposal”.

He also disclosed that recently government purchased one thousand and forty-nine waste bins pads at strategic locations in parts of the metropolis to ensure that waste bins did not obstruct movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

The Commissioner therefore appealed to residents of the state to cooperate with government in its efforts to keep the city clean by ensuring proper disposal of their refuse and at appropriate areas.
