Court Convicts 62 Over Sanitation Offences
The Rivers State Special Sanitation Court, has convicted 62 persons for violation of last Saturday’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The 62 persons were arrested at different parts of Port Harcourt during the exercise.
Meanwhile, the state government has warned against further dumping of refuse in the middle of roads in Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli who said this during this month’s environmental sanitation exercise in Port Harcourt, observed that the situation is not only wicked, but an attempt to sabotage the efforts of the government in ensuring cleanliness in the state.
Dr Weli noted that government expects the people of the state to use their common sense in the issue of environmental sanitation, stressing that government does not need to enforce the laws to compel people to act in a decent manner .
He however said that the government would no longer fold its hands and watch people deface the city.
Meanwhile, Dr Weli has called for regular cleanliness of markets in the state.
Speaking with traders at the Mile III market Port Harcourt last weekend, the Commissioner stressed the need for them to ensure regular cleanliness of the market.
He said that, the government does not need to compel them to do what is right, noting that as responsible fathers and mothers in the society, it behoves them to act in a manner that is exemplary to the young ones in their communities.
Dr Weli emphasised that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise is compulsory for everyone in the state, pointing out that the government may be forced to apply sanction with a view to ensuring active participation in the exercise.
