Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has
commended the State House of Assembly for initiating an award aimed at
recognising the contributions of lawmakers to the development of the State.

Governor Amaechi made this commendation last Thursday during
a Corporate parley/Fund Raiser for the Red Carpet 2012 organised by the Rivers
State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt.

Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor
Amaechi said “it is the first time in the history of this nation that any State
House of Assembly would deem it necessary to recognise the sacrifices rendered
by lawmakers”, describing the Red Carpet 2012 as a positive development aimed
at rewarding their contributions to the development of the State and humanity.

The State Chief Executive lauded the legislature for
collaborating with the executive in the formulation and implementation of
people-oriented policies in the State, assuring the legislators of his
administration sustained cordial relationship.

In his speech, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt.
Hon. Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, said the event is put together to raise funds for
the premiere event coming up in September, explaining that it is to “honour
hard-work and excellence in legislative business for past and serving members
who have distinguished themselves since October, 1979, when the Assembly was
proclaimed”.

He disclosed that the State Assembly has been adjudged the
best because of its peaceful and harmonious relationship with the executive.

Earlier in a talk on “Corporate Legislation, Economic Growth
and Development in Nigeria”, Dr. Basil Nnamdi of the University of Port
Harcourt stressed the importance of a legal framework that would fast-track the
economic development of country, calling on the legislators to live up to their
responsibilities and also review the tax laws in the State to check double
taxation.
