Amaechi Cup Exceeds Expectations – Commissioner

Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Fred Igwe has
said that the just concluded Township Street Football competition, tagged
“Amaechi Cup” exceeded expectations and achieved its purpose by integrating the
youths in the area.

Hon. Igwe said this at the weekend, while formally handing
over cheques for prize monies to the winners of the tournament in Port
Harcourt.

The competition officially ended a week ago with Sokoto
Street emerging champions, earning the star prize of N10 million. Reclamation
and Station Roads grabbed the sum of N5 million and N3 million as they placed
second and third, respectively.

The Sport Commissioner stated that the purpose of the
tournament was to integrate the youths promote grassroots football peace and
unity in the area.

According to him, what he saw during the competition has
convinced him that there is love, peace and unity among the youths.

“I am sure that those who were not greeting each other
before this competition have been made to play together, by now they are
friends”, Hon Igwe stated.

He thanked the State Governor, Rt Hon. Rotimi Amaechi for
sponsoring the competition and being physically present during the opening and
closing ceremonies of the competition.

Hon.  Igwe also
commended the Local Organising Committee (LOC) over a successful tournament,
including the security personel and participating teams for their conduct
during the tournament.

Speaking at the occasion, the Permanent Secretary of the
Ministry, Engr Paulinus Nwankwoala expressed joy over the successful completion
of the tournament.

According to him, the competition exceeded expectations,
especially, the huge turnout of spectators during matches.

Also speaking, the LOC Chairman Daboere Dokubo noted that
during the tournament some talents were discovered and urged coaches of the
state owned teams, Sharks and Dolphins to make use of the talents discovered.

He thanked the state government for giving him and his
members the opportunity to serve.
