Abubakar Rallies Hausa Community Behind Sports Dev In Rivers
Ex-footballer and one of the leading sports philanthropists
among the Hausa community in Rivers State, Alhaji Abubakar Wurno, has described
the on-going Street Football Competition, Amechi Cup, in Port Harcourt as a
positive influence on the youths and a plank for peace and empowerment in the
state.
The former Customs and Shagari United FCs’ player, who spoke
to newsmen after watching the second semi final match at the No 1 Field, on
Wednesday, called on the Hausa community in the state to embrace the
competition and support the developmental efforts of the State Governor, Rt
Hon. Chibuike Amaechi.
He said that the Amaechi Cup has impacted positively on the
Town axis of the city, engaging the youths meaningfully and promoting peace in
the area.
Alhaji Wurno was full of appreciation for the governor for
introducing the competition, coupled with the sporting facilities on ground and
urged other governors to emulate his developmental strides.
The philanthropist, who hails from Sokoto State has been
doling out cash rewards for the most valuable players (MVPs) of every match, as
a way of encouraging the players and supporting the competition.
He however, disclosed that he has soft spot for the Sokoto
Street team, which shares name with his state of origin.
According to him, the Hausa community in the state has
benefitted from the competition by having their children participate in the
games and equally using it as an opportunity for recreation, relaxation and
learning process.
He further commended Governor Amaechi for restoring enduring
peace to the area.
